The picture from this week was taken in Paris, France!
As her first trip abroad was France, it’s just a bit symbolic that we chose France for her first photo.
Unfortunately we couldn’t find the pictures from her first trip to France (they were on slides and not sure where they are now!), so this is from a later visit in 2006.
At the time, Big Person lived in Wiesbaden, Germany, so this February trip was a Valentine’s Day weekend in Paris. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a weekend in Paris, the city of romance. Oh là là!
As some of you correctly identified, the building pictured is the Sacré Cœur Basilica. Located in the Montmartre district of Paris, it is a Catholic church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is distinctive both from its height, 200 m above the Seine, and its architecture in the Neo-Byzantine-Romaneque style, and also to this day remains a point of contention because of its connection and symbolism against the French revolutionary actions.
Clues were primarily the Sacré Cœur, supported by French language and phone numbers with 01 xx xx xxxx, which is the city code for Paris.
Did you know that European phone numbers vary in length? This really confused me when I first started making phone calls in Europe. The United States has a fixed number of digits, XXX (area code)YYY-YYYY. When dialing within the same area code, it could be omitted, but dialing was always seven numbers or ten. In most of the world, it is common to see phone numbers written with the country code first. France's country code is +33, but numbers within the country are written 0xxxxx..
